Project Overview

As part of the overall City Centre Regeneration Project the concept was to provide a visually stunning lighting solution to this dilapidated underpass and remove the undesirable elements that frequented this underpass at night by providing a safe, well lit environment. It was also part of the bigger plan within Coventry City to link the railway station to the main Broadgate Square through a series of regeneration projects along the route. The scheme evolved into a solution that incorporated Philips RGB products into bespoke recessed enclosures manufactured by LITE Ltd. The two back walls of the underpass were lit with a run of end to end mounted linear RGB fixtures with a 10x60deg controlled beam that was able to provide a colour wash to the black ‘iron’ brickwork and provide reflected light off the ceiling. To support this the structural columns were uplit on two sides of the columns closest to the pathway, so that walking through the underpass you always had a lit face of a column presented to you, and on the front face of the columns set back away from the pathway. The lighting controls system ran a number of set shows each week with a blue chasing sequence triggering on the hour for one minute and with specific colour themes on set calendar dates such as Valentines Day & St. Patricks Day. Unfortunately this underpass was removed some 24months after the scheme was installed and the products are being recycled onto other projects within Coventry City.
